SOWK 325 : SOCIAL WORK IN MENTAL HEALTH

This course explores the role of social work in mental health, as social workers play a key role in the delivery of mental health services. Students will examine the historical, social, and policy contexts of mental health services. The course content will provide students with the opportunity to analyze the impact of stigma, systemic inequities, and social determinants of health on mental health. Students will be introduced to the foundations of diagnosing mental illness as well as basic mental health interventions. All course content will be delivered from a strengths-based perspective and will highlight the importance of client self-determination, cultural sensitivity, and trauma-informed care.
