NUR 611 : PMHNP ROLE, ETHICS, SCOPE OF PRACT

This graduate-level course prepares emerging Psychiatric-Mental Health Nurse Practitioners (PMHNPs) to assume advanced practice roles grounded in ethical integrity, legal accountability, and professional excellence. Emphasis is placed on the development of a strong professional identity through exploration of role differentiation, national competencies, certification standards, and the regulatory frameworks that shape PMHNP practice across diverse clinical settings. Students critically analyze federal and state regulations, including prescriptive authority, controlled substance management (DEA), confidentiality, and documentation standards, to ensure safe, compliant, and patient-centered care.

Using case-based learning, policy analysis, and reflective practice, students examine ethical dilemmas, cultural humility, trauma-informed principles, and risk mitigation strategies within psychiatric-mental health care. Leadership, advocacy, interprofessional collaboration, and quality improvement concepts are integrated to advance equitable mental health outcomes and system transformation. By the conclusion of the course, students will synthesize a personal practice philosophy and develop a professional growth plan that reflects evidence-based role competence, ethical reasoning, and commitment to lifelong learning, certification readiness, and responsible PMHNP practice.
