This introductory abstract algebra course is divided into four main areas: Groups, Rings, Integral Domain and Fields, although we will concentrate fundamentally on Groups and Rings. This class will help increase students understanding and appreciation of mathematical structures, as well as the use of conjecture and deductive logic in the axiomatic development of mathematical theory. The primary objective here is the development of mathematical maturity. Students intending to go to graduate school in mathematics must take both Math 396 and 398. Fall semester. Alternate Years.
